European Capital of Culture 2010: "Münster makes it"

Sorry, folks, but Münster is just provincial. The State Museum for Archaeology is gone, the theater is provincial, the city's cultural funding can only be described as non-existent, and otherwise there's really nothing here about being a cultural capital. The application is ridiculous. Big talk and grand speeches, but nothing but hot air.

Post from the Experimental Laboratory

A farce of courts and corporate interests that weigh more heavily than the truth: Covenance manages to get two injunctions through court. On one hand, an injunction against video surveillance (an injunction that would at least be acceptable under the argument of employee privacy rights - animal welfare aside, employees have rights too) and one that simply establishes that the video footage shown in Frontal21 (broadcast from 9.12.2003 and from 16.12.2003) was illegally recorded and therefore may not be shown again. The latter is the point where my acceptance of the court ends: since when is press freedom suddenly worth nothing? When private individuals suffer from paparazzi harassment, the public interest is placed higher. But when a company operates one of the largest animal testing laboratories and demonstrably - the video footage exists and proves it - mistreats animals, is the company's interest greater than the public interest?

Absurd. Simply absurd. And one feels ashamed as a resident of Münster that both Covenant and the court ruling in Münster are...

Localfeeds: Münster(50)

I really like this: GeoURL+RSS results in Localfeeds. And with that, an RSS feed for Münster and the surrounding area.

However, umlauts and such are pretty chaotic and the result isn't really usable with PyDS. I should try it with NetNewswire to see if it handles it better.

News: Microsoft the Engine - Linux the Brake?

Of course nothing new - just more FUD about Linux and hype about Microsoft again. What bothers me about the whole thing though: apparently an institute at the University of Münster let itself be bought for this study. Since Münster is my hometown, I take this kind of nonsense somewhat personally - I would have expected more integrity from the University of Münster. But money rules the world, nobody cares about facts anymore.

Vischering Castle in Lüdinghausen

50-300-200.jpeg

Remnants of summer follow-up processing - 6 images of Vischering Castle in Lüdinghausen. A beautiful, picturesque castle. Just as you imagine a castle to be, with towers, defensive walls, drawbridges, and moat.

Shot with the Contax RTS III and the Sonnar 2.8/180, the 1.4/50 Planar, and a 3.5/17 Tokina on Kodak Portra 400 BW. Developed and scanned, by the way, at the Münster Fuji Minilab. Only the post-processing (slight tonal value correction and highpass sharpening), of course, done myself.

Municipality is in dire straits

Do all municipalities have the same intelligence as Münster and, during their austerity measures, prefer to promote and support stupid prestige projects instead of social facilities? At tagesschau on the internet you can find the original article.

Münsterland Tour of Juniors starting Friday

Ahlen, Borken, Coesfeld and Ibbenbüren. Somehow they interpreted the Münsterland quite freely.

Post without title

After a long time, I took my digital camera with me again and shot a few pictures of the city library.

41-100-100.jpeg

Here's a picture of the main entrance. Lots of glass, lots of metal, slanted sides and impractical corners. No idea what possessed the architect, apparently it's supposed to be a special feature, but it doesn't suit my taste. But at least it provides a few motifs.

42-100-100.jpeg

And here's the view back from the main entrance. A small passage that runs between the main building and an aimlessly standing side building and is crossed by a kind of bridge.

43-100-100.jpeg

And to match the architecture, the lamps too, which somehow look like they could only illuminate the lower part of the building. Which is actually also true.

If architects want to call me a philistine now, go ahead, I can take it. I still think the building is ugly.

Marco's world

From time to time you have to take another look at geourl, there are indeed occasionally new neighbors, even here in the provinces. When exactly is the critical threshold reached where someone voluntarily agrees to build a blogplan for Münster? Here's the original article.

Banking service provider GAD closes four locations

Well, I started my apprenticeship as a data processing merchant at that store 17 years ago (to be exact on 1.8.86). It's quite remarkable how much everything has changed - back then it was a store with about 330 employees, fairly compact and with a surprisingly social management and a very pleasant work atmosphere. Today it has all become noticeably sharper and harder. Shame - because somewhere something got lost that had once made the store a dream employer in Münster. Well, for a few years now I've been sitting in a subsidiary of GAD, and in a couple more years it will probably be as big as GAD was back when I started...

Somehow I feel old now.

Cute. But I'm somehow not in the mood to do that for Münster. Looks like work. Doesn't one of the others here feel like it?

Yet another alleged representation of the people's will ...

Na Class, another far-right party that wants to draw from the brown swamp. Founded and carried by people who didn't even seem acceptable to the Schill party. Why does such rabble have to meet precisely in Münster?

Gaelic is dying

Sad. Really sad. But unfortunately not unusual for people in Europe. Many languages are dying out. I'm thinking of Frisian, or something like Münsterländer Platt.
