Yeah, the different ammo tokens are pure thematic fluff, a few different generic ones would be totally fine.

That one is All Bridges Burning: Red Revolt and White Guard in Finland, 1917-1918 – in addition to a card-based AI it is the first 3-faction-COIN and – just like Ghandi – has a non-violent faction. Will be interesting what comes out o…

I own Cuba Libre, Falling Sky: The Gallic Revolt Against Caesar and Liberty or Death: The American Insurrection. So far only played CL and FS, as they are smaller on the table. I think CL is the better ine to start, as you can easily …

It is a holiday, the wife is working (nurse at a retirement home) and I am alone at home. What better time to start a revolution at Cuba? I played Castro and the Directorio against the government and syndicate bots. Castro went in first, barely reaching his win con (well, at 17 he even had one point more as needed). Second the syndicate bit with just one open casino missing (and only due to one of his cash tokens being in a place with stacking
Endlich Mal wieder Cuba Libre gespielt (Castro und Directorio gegen zwei Bots). Und sogar Mal gewonnen, was nicht so oft passiert. /u/bboomslang on What’s your most favorite board game publishers?
GMT Games. It is the only company I buy almost whole series from – like for example the COIN games – or almost everything by specific designers – Mark Herman for example. Funny enough, all of them are only for solo play, as there are only rarely German…

Nope, second link not working, too. I think BGG kills stuff after a ? in the URL, unless you take precautions or stuff like that.

I think the upcoming Root might fit, as it is essentially a heavily asymmetric card driven conflict game by Leder Games, designed by Cole Wehrle. I a cautiously excited about it, allthough this one really is a still ongoing design. It…

I am looking forward to the updated Erasmus (and to actually get the game, too, of course) and hope it will be useable with Southern Pacific, too, just to have a smaller-scale and shorter game to find my way in.

Anything that reduces the work load on solo players while keeping up the pressure of the bots (and the characteristics of the faction) is a giod thing in my book. One if the reasons some COIN games get on the table much is the overhea…
/u/bboomslang on Has anyone received Pendragon yet? Most rules heavy COIN yet?
They are primarily four player designs (except colonial twilight and the upcoming all bridges burning), where all factions are a must in play. That is why Volko started with the bots, because they allow to play with less than four players without one of the players taking two factions. That you can play solo with three bots (or even only bots) is just a function of them providing bits for all factions, so people can select relatively freely (older coin games had a few limits on which bots would work solo) what faction to play. Of course soloability is maxed that way and of course GMT markets that, it would be dumb not to. Wargames classically had a soloability rating attached. Doesn’t make them primarily solo designs, though. It just happened to turn out that way as a result of the hard four-factions design.

/u/bboomslang on Worst games of 2017?
Lets put it this way: I got as far as being able to make it barely through half of the pre-cooked intro scenario. I didn’t get any motivation to try again or unwrap any of the non-intro packs.
/u/bboomslang on Concordia is good, but,
Not playing it all the time, but always willing to play and did take it to our weekly game meet for a good while and played it there. It really is a great game with great design and good play. Easy to teach and not too long when played. And the theme -…
/u/bboomslang on Looking for co-op card games
Paperback has a co-op mode that works great. And as a deck builder it is not too sprawling, should work fine on a cafe table.
/u/bboomslang on Biggest surprise of 2017?
Triplock. I mostly got it because I trust the chip theory games guys to make fun stuff. But I had some nagging feeling that a memory game – especially one played solo – might just be tough to pull of. But man did they deliver – the solo campaign really…
/u/bboomslang on Worst games of 2017?
That was why I went in, too. I really liked PACG, but felt the character progression was a bit too linear and the scenarios and overall story too scripted. It kinda felt like “my first DnD campaign”. But the system itself felt promising. So with Apocrypha and it’s non-linear connection of scenarios and the way characters didn’t just grow better and better but instead just developed both benefits and detriments until they succumb to ultimate failure – that sounded really good. Sadly they stuffed it in a box with a really bad learning experience. Outch.

Zulus on the Ramparts! might be an option, if you can accept randomness – dice, cards and chit pull are a bit much for some people, but the card play has some astonishing depth for such a type of game. Essentially a castle defense gam…

Apocrypha. Horrible rule book (come on, a card game with multiple card types and not a single f’ing page giving a card layout rundown?) that really doesn’t help with playing the game and tutorial videos from the designers that are even worse (watching boring people playing a pre-cooked game setup trying to be interesting and totally failing, while also failing at teaching the f’ing game they designed is really an accomplishment). That game makes me really angry, because it was not a first-timer company, it was a bunch of people that were all about how professional they are – delivering an unprofessional pile of cards that definitely never made it through blind testing with a rule book like that. And I am even a Patfinder ACG player, but not even that helped with understanding the rule book. Bah.
/u/bboomslang on So, what’s in your Top 10 for 2017
I only got it for solo play, so, no multiplayer for me and no plans for it. It is just for me to grab when I want some brain-light thing to play and to take with me on business trips.
/u/bboomslang on So, what’s in your Top 10 for 2017
Too much money for a game I probably will only play solo – and legacy, which I don’t really enjoy the thought of, as I don’t have stable groups for repeated play, so again, only solo. My wife doesn’t enjoy fantasy, too, so it would really be hard to get to the table with her. 7th cintinent is realistic enough, catering more pulp adventure theme than fantasy, so that hopefully will be easier.
Sword&Sorcery already is a only-for-me game, don’t need that many 😉 – and S&S for me is not just the game itself, but probably also a kitchen sink of generic fantasy stuff to use in other games.
/u/bboomslang on So, what’s in your Top 10 for 2017
Hmm, although I do have 10 games rated for 2017, I don’t think bad rated games belong into a top ten 😉 – so here my favorites as far as favorites go:
The 7th Continent
The Godfather
Nemo’s War
Azul
Godforsaken Scavengers
Triplock
The Lost Expedition
Sword & Sorcery
The biggest surprise were really Triplock (normally totally not a fan of memory games and one with a solo mode even? But it works great!) and Godforsaken Scavengers (solo press your luck? Small box with just a bunch of cards? For me the result play super well and is really thematic). The others I expected to be good and they delivered. Fun year with some very diverse stuff for me.
Funny enough, only two of them (Godfather and Azul) don’t play solo. But I think two non-solo games in my top list is quite high for me.
