Zulus on the Ramparts! might be an option, if you can accept randomness – dice, cards and chit pull are a bit much for some people, but the card play has some astonishing depth for such a type of game. Essentially a castle defense gam…

/u/bboomslang on Worst games of 2017?
Apocrypha. Horrible rule book (come on, a card game with multiple card types and not a single f’ing page giving a card layout rundown?) that really doesn’t help with playing the game and tutorial videos from the designers that are even worse (watching boring people playing a pre-cooked game setup trying to be interesting and totally failing, while also failing at teaching the f’ing game they designed is really an accomplishment). That game makes me really angry, because it was not a first-timer company, it was a bunch of people that were all about how professional they are – delivering an unprofessional pile of cards that definitely never made it through blind testing with a rule book like that. And I am even a Patfinder ACG player, but not even that helped with understanding the rule book. Bah.
/u/bboomslang on So, what’s in your Top 10 for 2017
I only got it for solo play, so, no multiplayer for me and no plans for it. It is just for me to grab when I want some brain-light thing to play and to take with me on business trips.
/u/bboomslang on So, what’s in your Top 10 for 2017
Too much money for a game I probably will only play solo – and legacy, which I don’t really enjoy the thought of, as I don’t have stable groups for repeated play, so again, only solo. My wife doesn’t enjoy fantasy, too, so it would really be hard to get to the table with her. 7th cintinent is realistic enough, catering more pulp adventure theme than fantasy, so that hopefully will be easier.
Sword&Sorcery already is a only-for-me game, don’t need that many π – and S&S for me is not just the game itself, but probably also a kitchen sink of generic fantasy stuff to use in other games.
/u/bboomslang on So, what’s in your Top 10 for 2017
Hmm, although I do have 10 games rated for 2017, I don’t think bad rated games belong into a top ten π – so here my favorites as far as favorites go:
The 7th Continent
The Godfather
Nemo’s War
Azul
Godforsaken Scavengers
Triplock
The Lost Expedition
Sword & Sorcery
The biggest surprise were really Triplock (normally totally not a fan of memory games and one with a solo mode even? But it works great!) and Godforsaken Scavengers (solo press your luck? Small box with just a bunch of cards? For me the result play super well and is really thematic). The others I expected to be good and they delivered. Fun year with some very diverse stuff for me.
Funny enough, only two of them (Godfather and Azul) don’t play solo. But I think two non-solo games in my top list is quite high for me.

Some more action with Hoplomachus, again against Menoetius. This time a solid victory, as I got him locked up while my fast tacticians activated all shards, so I finally could beat him up. My archer and my attacker did good work finally activating my champion that joined the fight and made short work of the […]

Erstes spielen von Zulus on the Ramparts. SchΓΆn politisch inkorrekt aus heutiger Perspektive, aber spannendes solo-Spiel. Zulus on the Ramparts is a fun little tower defense game with historical flavor. Won this one, although with 30 points it will be remembered as a minor Zulu victory, since I didn't get the Zulus off the board. One more tribe and it would have been viewed more positively. Oh well, next fight will […]
/u/bboomslang on Is Rune Age worth picking up for predominantly Solo game?
add to that the problem that the four base races have each cards that are really not useful for solo play. The expansion opens it up a bit, for one you get more races, and you get additional cards, so you get a bit more variability of setups and plans to win. And there are some BGG fan provided variants to play other scenarios solo or solo multi-handed. But all said: I would say that for solo play only, it’s only worth it if you get it all for cheap.

I am wondering, now that Christopher Tolkien is not heading the Tolkien Estate anymore, and there are talks about a Silmarillion movie even, might that mean an official Silmarillion saga expansion cycle?

you build the deck and put one deck each into a sleeve, not single cards. You literaly shuffle the decks, not the cards.
/u/bboomslang on This sounds weird to admit but when games offer me too much customization (deck building, character building via drafting etc) I find that as a turnoff.
Absolutely agree, and I even did introduce friends to magic by teaching them EDH. Outch. One of them still asks when new games come up “this is nit like Magic, is it?”, he is so scared of it now π
I prefer non-customizable games for myself, too, most of the time. I love to build magic decks or decks for LOTR:LCG, but when I just want to play something, I might just grab Viticulture or Azul or some other game with some variability but without any pre-game activities. Which sadly makes some games stay on the shelf for far too long inbetween games, but the days where I can’t be bothered with pre-game customization/preparation are far more than thise where I am un the mood.
That might be the reason why I love deckbuilders and drafting games, as the customization is the actual game there.

Totally with you there. I don’t see people driven away feom solo gaming due to Tom or other DT folks saying they don’t solo – so why this obsession with them over and over again? They provide solid reviews with some insights on games, that’s it. What they think about soloing isn’t really a big thing. And definutely nit such a big thing to make a fuss about regularily.
