I’ve got Tak, played it once, but it didn’t really click with me and my wife especially. She needs a modicum of pasted on theme to guide her. Tak is too abstract for her to enjoy it seems. But I will try again, as I love it’s simplicity. But I guess we have to play out give before that happening, so might take a while 😉

/u/bboomslang on Best games to play on the go?
Hive Pocket and Red 7 are with us on the road almost always. Both nice quick games to play when waiting for your food at the restaurant. The Duke was another one we played a lot while out and about, but lately Hive replaced it (since it is smaller).
/u/bboomslang on What would you do with a guild kit?
Colleague and me decided to try to create „Ravnica Brawl“ as a format – like Brawl, but all Ravnica sets are legal. The kits are almost Singleton already, so not much needs to change. But Izzet definitely needs a hand to be able to keep up, at least wi…
/u/bboomslang on Should Flash be banned in Competitive EDH?
Think of it this way: CEDH is Vintage where all cards are restricted. Yeah, only one-of Flash, but the same is true for all answers. While they dig or tutor for flash, you dig or tutor for answers and at the same time try to find your broken combo. And…
/u/bboomslang on Which lands/land cycles would you like added to Pauper?
The bicycle lands maybe? They could be cool. And I think they would be fine at Common, but they would make [[Farseek]] and likewise cards much better, so green might get a leg up in multicolor decks.
/u/bboomslang on Reading Richard Garfield’s original 93/94 essay on the creation of his game from The Pocket Players’ Guide
But even there the joke’s on them, because if the deck is really good, it will earn chains or even be retired. And even in casual settings I would expect people to put chains on too efficient decks.
/u/bboomslang on Reading Richard Garfield’s original 93/94 essay on the creation of his game from The Pocket Players’ Guide
Kinda, I would say. I mean, he came around and built Keyforge, which essentially is sealed with a less totally random distribution of cards. So I definitely would say that sealed and maybe draft get the closest to what he envisioned.
/u/bboomslang on GRN Guild Kits, how balanced they are?
I played the Izzet against the Golgari and the Izzet deck totally underperformed – it has not enough tools to handle some of the Golgari creatures like for example the Lotleth Troll, which came out T2 or T3 in those games and then just wasn’t something I could do anything about. Sure, one could say that was tough drawing and luck on my opponent, but the whole Izzet deck has really no relevant T1 plays and only mediocre T2 plays (aside from signets), it is T3 where it starts to shine. Synergie and efficiency in the Golgari deck looks to be much better than the Izzet deck. Outside of the nut draw I don’t see the Izzet deck really making an early impact and the late impact – from the deck list and gold fishing – looks to be too late to really matter against Golgari and probably Boros. A bit sad, because Izzet is my favorite guild. Hope to get a better impression after repeated plays, maybe (hopefully) it’s just me being unlucky and dumb.

It’s an interesting choice to make the starting scenario so similar to the WQ:ACG starting scenario. It helps things feel familiar, but also makes it feel too well-trodden.

/u/bboomslang on Trôl – has anyone else played it?
Did play it at Essen, didn’t really liked it – too much ways to get screwed by cards and dice and for me far too long for what it is. The constant adding up if power on hunts and weighting the chances to score is just slowing down the game too much without actual benefits. It feels like it should be fast, but enough to trolls out and it just isn’t. And there are too many ways to be left in the dust with no real chance to catch up except random chance.

Just saying I seen them at Essen and they look gorgeous. Didn’t get them due to the price, they went for 60 EUR per set. But they really look great!
/u/bboomslang on Does anyone else like Serum Visions over Ponder?
For ponder, it’s mostly “simple”: if the stuff is not game-winning and you don’t have ways to shuffle away 2 or 3 bad cards separately (no fetches in hand or uncracked fetches on the table or other discard available), use the shuffle option. Because as you rightfully contemplate, the bad ones will bother you. Not drawing one good card but having the chance to get rid of two bad ones in the next three draws is damn good.
I think people far too rarely use the shuffle option of Ponder. It quite often is more powerful than the “draw this specific card now”. Reverse it’s text to “shuffle your library and draw a card unless you happen to see 3 game-winning bombs” and you get your priorities straight 😉
/u/bboomslang on Cloudspire by CTG – Kickstarter just launched. Are you backing it?
Yep. Sure, it costs an arm and a leg, but that was the case with previous CTG games, too. For me it is the game play and enjoyment of their games: quick setup, easy play, great feel of components, clear representation of game state and oodles of fun. They have solid solo modes that don’t feel tacked on (well, Triplock was a bit an outlier, but I still like it as a solo game) but feel like a real game. I have most of Hoplomachus and quite a bit TMB and all of Triplock and they all count among my favourite games, so it looks like the CTG guys just seem to hit my gamer nerve quite well. That makes me go in on a new IP from them, too. I just trust them to make something cool.

/u/bboomslang on Mongoose Delver in Pauper?
Why no [[Hooting Mandrill]]? It’s evasion should be nice, as lots of creatures in pauper are /3 and it comes in quite early while staying a 4/4 through graveyard nukes.
/u/bboomslang on Grixis Delver
How about some [[Firebrand Archer]]? I think their more immediate effect makes them more comparable to YP – the classic YP+Probe play now becomes FA+Probe. The Alchemists has a bigger bum for blocking, but I don’t think it is where this deck wants to be. And if the Archer survives, it can go in for two more. I would split with the Archer maybe, since they can survive Electricity or Shrivel or such like. And I think to go up against removal heavy decks you want some [[Stormbound Geist]] SB, especially since your only defense in the air would be a flipped Delver. But they might be a bit hard to play in a 3 colour deck.
Additionally I probably would switch the ratio on Ash Barrens and Expanse. Ash Barrens is horrible in a starting hand, as you might end up where you can only play them as a land due to missing mana for the cycle.
Dang, I really want to try this, it looks very good on paper. I’ve tried to do Grixis in pauper, but sadly it never really felt that better than straight UR or UB when actually trying it. But I was going with [[Whirlwind Adept]] as a finisher in a Grixis control shell, only taking removal from black.
But what I think we are missing in Grixis to really make it worthwhile is some way other than delve creatures to make use of the graveyard. I am not asking for a Snapcaster, but some efficient way to make use aside from just four threats would make this much better. I tried RUG Delver with [[Reclaim]], but that didn’t feel that great. But I still was on Whirlwinds then, so now I wonder if [[Hooting Mandrill]] could be it?
/u/bboomslang on I got caught up in a conversation about the best board game for traveling, and now after about a year of carrying it around, I think its HIVE: Pocket

/u/bboomslang on What 2019 comma Der deck to buy
I got myself the UR artifact deck and it’s quite fun and was easy to power up for me with my existing collection. Of course this depends on how wide your card collection already is, but getting better duals (Fetch+Shock+ a few non-tapped duals) is the main investment. Maybe a few big eldrazi or golems to pump the top-end and a few more solid mana rocks or Thopter producers, but that’s mostly it. And even if you keep the base deck and play it, it should do quite well already. It’s plans are astonishingly solid for a precon.
Edit: it’s not at all competetive, though, just to make sure it’s explicitely said, because we are in the cEDH reddit. But I think it could at least be made viable, because essentially Saheeli is Tron in your command zone and we know how big-mana strategies can go broken in other constructed formats.
/u/bboomslang on I came to Commander looking for something different. Instead, I found more of the same.
It most definitely is. Don’t expect durdling and anything else than “there is my opponent, kill him fast and hard” in 1v1. There is no real social aspect to 1v1 and so anything but streamlined decks will just plain fail. This makes decks converge towards typical set of staples in their colors. There will be variations, but when I play just one opponent, why should I opt for a weird wincon that might work, if I have a solid wincon that definitely will work?

I approve this window.
/u/bboomslang on PSA: It might not be worth it to build around odd CMC cards for Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign but don’t worry, she’s still great.
You are playing in the colors of top-deck-tutors. You only need some odd-cmc Wincons to cheat in, not to build the whole deck around it.
/u/bboomslang on Izzet us you are looking for?
