I only see “play as the alien queen” and get interested. Hopefully no silly competoop, though, but a real coop against pesky humans.

I am in, because it is a really asymmetric design, down even to the game play mechanics. I don’t have many overlord style games in my collection and this is a nice historic themes take on that. And it gives me a way to play a CDG agai…

Scythe maybe? War isn’t the Prime Focus, though, it is just one Tool to use or not to use.

/u/bboomslang on Wargemes on your Table — June 2016 Edition
Man, for me it is more the “pile of shame I push forward every month”, because I didn’t get any hey-and-counter action in. I hope to get some of that – planned is some play of Space Empires 4X – this month, finally, because my wife is out-and-about for over a week in june. Lets hope for the best 🙂 (I definitely will get in some COIN action, though, because Liberty or Death is waiting for it’s first play desperately).

Wir sind das Volk! gives me kinda a COIN game feel, with cards out that can be activated for events, cube pushing on a map and placement of wooden discs as a kind of “upgrade” for locations (in COIN usually bases, in WsdV life quality…

/u/bboomslang on [WSIG] Looking for a strategic solo game
An alternative to the multitude of coop game suggestions you probably will get (which are all fine, don’t get me wrong) could be the GMT COIN games. They give a nice historic background and a really strategic game that can be played with 1-4 players. They all have asymmetric factions (current COIN games all have 4 factions) that can be played solo, with the other factions run by flowchart-driven bots. Currently easily available should be Cuba Libre (Cuban Revolution), A Distant Plain (Afghanistan conflict), Falling Sky (Gallic tribes vs. Caesar). Cuba Libre or Falling Sky would be great starting points, as they are the simplest of those games. A Distant Plain is quite heavy, I wouldn’t get that as my first COIN game.
I myself havbe Cuba Libre and love it, and have Liberty or Death, which I haven’t yet played (but man is that game gorgeous to look at, I could almost hang the map on the wall as a picture 😉 ). LoD is about the american war of independence.
Play time for the full scenario can easily go up into the multi-hour range (4+ hours) with the bigger COINs, but with the smaller ones (CL and FS) and with selecting smaller scenarios, you can get down to 1-2 hours. And yes, they are heavily strategic. They sit on the border of war games and euro games, my feeling is they are more leaning towards the euro genre, but they keep the theme up very well. And hey, you might even learn a bit about history!

/u/bboomslang on Arkham Horror: The Card Game (possible leak)
Man I’d so be over another Coop lcg! Especially one where the Lore is not so tightly constructed as in LOTR (it always Bugs me if I put Steward of Gondor on anyone but a Gondor noble). And well, after they Finish the main Saga for LOTR, I guess it is maybe another cycle of their own non-saga stuff and then they will run low on story Content. Sure, they can do even more of their own Content, but I guess the amount is kinda limited.

Just received my game in Germany. Yay! I forgot to order the time to actually play it, though … (at least for the moment – wife is away in two weeks for a week, so I guess the it is solo beat-the-zeds time 😉 )
/u/bboomslang on Do you Solo?
I play quite a bit Solo, especially consims, since my wife doesn’t really like to dive into complex games and most of them are in English (she doesn’t speak it). It works even with games without Solo options for me, I usually let the game expand and tell the story, providing only the guiding Hand for decisions in that story. I think the key is to not identify with one side, but really take an Outsider perspective.

/u/bboomslang on What were your biggest Kickstarter wins and losses for 2015-2016?
Lost Woods is a big meh. Concept sounded cool, implementation is just boring and random. And for that it was far too expensive.

Yeah, the graphics from the previous prototypes shown in previews looked much nicer to me than the newer style showing on the campaign. Still cool, though. But sadly without solo mode not really intersting for me.
/u/bboomslang on What is Star Realms solo like?
I wasn’t really enarmored by the solo play, but I only have the Nemesis solo card. It doesn’t feel like playing the game at all, because the Nemesis is just something that punishes you every turn and you try desperately to survive. It’s not the back-and-forth you would have with a real opponent or even the AI from the app. It is very puzzly, so normally would be something I enjoy, but in the case of the Nemesis it is just too punishing. And quite a few abilities of your cards just plain don’t matter (anything related to opponent discard). Felt more “meh” than “yay” to me.

Everything COIN ancients (so currently Falling Sky: The Gallic Revolt Against Caesar and Pendragon: The Fall of Roman Britain) will probably always be an auto-buy for me, as I love ancients as a theme. Navajo Wars is on P500 preorder for it’s next printing through UGG, too, and I am thinking about Comanchería: The Comanche Empire (1700-1875) (especially since it will come out earlier). And A Glorious Chance: The Naval Struggle for Lake Ontario, 1813 and Zeppelins: Monsters of the Purple Twilight from Legion Games are on preorder, too. Especially the latter one – how could I have not ordered a game with Zeppelins?
